Taiwan Pavilion at Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) opens to wide acclaim for "Beauty Made in Taiwan" feature 2013-11-22 Setting its eyes on the immense potential of the Spanish-speaking market, this year Taiwan will make its debut at the upcoming Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), the largest of its kind in Latin America. A Taiwan pavilion, based on the theme "Beauty, Made in Taiwan" and organized by the Taipei Book Fair Foundation (TBFF) under the auspices of Taiwan's Ministry of Culture (MOC), will be set up to showcase 408 digital and print publications, focusing on children's books and illustrations. This year the Taiwan pavilion at Guadalajara will be headlined by the celebrated illustrator Jimmy Liao, who to date has sold Spanish-language copyrights for seventeen books and has just been nominated for the 2014 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
Deputy Director of the Department of Humanities and Publications of the MOC Alice Wang pointed out that Taiwan's entry into the FIL this year signals the commencement of Taiwanese publishers' exploration of the vast and pivotal Spanish-speaking market—Taiwan's burgeoning outreach beyond Europe and Asia. In addition to the Taiwan pavilion, the MOC has subsidized the Spanish translation of twelve children's books and ten comic books, in a bid to facilitate copyright promotion at the FIL. TBFF Chair Doris Wang hailed Jimmy Liao as the perfect cultural ambassador for Taiwan's publishing industry. Taiwan's presence at the FIL will connect Taiwanese publishers with their Spanish-speaking counterparts, an "East-meets-West" encounter expected to spark more collaboration to come. Jimmy Liao's recent nomination for the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is further proof that Taiwanese children's books have already established a strong global presence, according to TBFF Executive Director Pao-Ping Huang. Jimmy Liao's illustrations have found worldwide acclaim. He is truly the epitome of cross-boundary and cross-cultural success "Made in Taiwan," for his books are represented in such diverse languages as English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Greek, German, Korean, Thai, Russian, Polish, and Estonian. The 2013 Guadalajara International Book Fair will take place from November 30 to December 8. The Mexican book fair was founded in 1987 by the University of Guadalajara and has grown to be the largest book fair in the Spanish-speaking world, second only to the Frankfurt Book Fair worldwide. Guadalajara is the second-largest city in Mexico, and the book fair attracts approximately 1,900 publishers and over 20,000 publishing professionals from more than 40 countries each year, representing over US$330 million of economic flow to the city of Guadalajara. Last year, it was estimated that more than 700,000 people attended the book fair. Approximately 406 million people in the world speak Spanish, making it the second most spoken language globally. Spanish is the official language of Spain, Mexico and almost all the countries of Central and South America. In Mexico, according to 2009 statistics, a total of 319.18 million books were printed in the state and private sectors. Around 60% of the state-produced books (197 million copies) were provided to primary schools free of charge. Private commercial publishers printed 121.8 million books. Of these, 27.7 % (33.7 million) were produced for the state and for various programs that supply schools and libraries. Clearly there is a considerable local market for educational publications and other books for children and young adults.
