Taiwan Pavilion at Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) opens to wide acclaim for "Beauty Made in Taiwan" feature 2013-12-05 The Taiwan Pavilion, which made its debut at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), the largest of its kind in Latin America, opened to great acclaim, especially for the fuchsia-toned graphic design "Beauty from Taiwan" by celebrated illustrator Jimmy Liao. The Taiwan Pavilion held an opening party on the first professional-only day, and it was graced with the presence of FIL Director Marisol Schulz and Fundación SM representative María Jesús Gil Iglesias.
The blue and green Taiwan Pavilion featured a wealth of illustrations and children's books, its distinctive image attracting a lot of attention in the international section of the book fair. Mexico's Milenio media group covered the Taiwan Pavilion in depth, as well as the robust reading scene in Taiwan, including the landmark 24-hour bookstore. The FIL also invited Taiwanese illustrator Jimmy Liao over for a book signing event in addition to the keynote speech—both attended by readers from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia. A group of die-hard fans came all the way from Mexico City to Guadalajara just for the chance to see Jimmy Liao in person. Jimmy Liao is arguably the best-known Taiwanese author in Latin America. So far he has had seventeen books translated into Spanish and published in the Spanish-speaking markets, including The Blue Stone (La Piedra Azul). The Taiwan Pavilion gave out Liao-designed "Beauty Made in Taiwan" paper hats to those who participated in the book signing and keynote speech, as well as those who visited the pavilion. The hats were a favorite with the visitors, especially younger readers, who would immediately put them on and have their pictures taken with Liao. Also at the book fair, Chair of the Taipei Book Fair Foundation (TBFF) Doris Wang hosted an "Asia Focus: Taiwan" event, joined by Taiwanese publishers Locus Publishing, Brilliant International Group, Grimm Press, Emily Publishing, and Hsin-Yi Publications. Wang revealed that currently there are approximately ten thousand publishers in Taiwan, with over forty thousand new books published each year. The participant publishers also gave brief introductions of their respective companies and product lineups, so that the Latin American publishing professionals could gain a better understanding of the Taiwan publishing scene. |
